Remote Education Provision: Information for Parents

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home? 

During this period of isolation from 5 January onwards:

  • Teachers will deliver the required curriculum remotely via Microsoft Teams
  • We will offer the usual school timetable remotely whereby pupils complete set learning tasks in the allocated lesson time (there will be 5-minute screen breaks after each lesson).
  • Our remote teaching is a blended approach consisting of:

1)  Live lesson element (includes daily tutor time 08:35 – 09:15)

2)  Recorded teaching (Government recommended websites such as The Oak National Academy and video/audio recordings made by teachers)

3) Commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects, including video clips or sequences (Maths Watch, Seneca Learning, GCSE Pod)

During other periods of isolation, when students are sent home:

Staff will deliver a blended approach consisting of live teaching and providing work on Teams for students to complete. Students need to follow their regular timetable while isolating.

Please be aware there may still be incidents of staff absence during this time and work will be set accordingly via Teams.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school? 

Your child will receive the same broad and balanced curriculum as they would if they were attending the academy. In some cases, students may be required to undertake new and alternative approaches to achieve this, e.g. using a fitness app in PE or online workout.

 Remote Teaching and Study Time Each Day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day? 

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

Year 7 - 13 Approximately 5 Hours a day


Accessing Remote Education 

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing? 

All remote learning will be delivered through Microsoft Teams and pupils should follow their normal school timetable. Each lesson will consist of a live delivery element and set learning tasks. Teachers will be on hand to respond to questions and offer support within the timetabled tutor period or lesson.

Information for students

How do I access remote learning from home?

  • Log in to AirHead by visiting with your usual school email and password
  • Open the Microsoft Teams app
  • Open your tutor group or class team and be ready at the start of the scheduled lesson
  • Your class teacher will invite you to a meeting at the start time of your timetabled lesson – please join
  • All learning materials and resources will be added to your class team

During the lesson, if you have a question or need help with your work, you can send a message to your teacher in the class team chat. They will answer as soon as possible.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education? 

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. If there are any barriers to a pupil engaging with online learning, these should be communicated to the relevant year team to see if the school can resolve the issue. There are a number of ways the academy is trying to do this:

  • DfE Laptops: Over 100 devices have already been loaned or given to pupils and we are awaiting a further delivery.
  • Data: Pupils without adequate access to data at home have been supplied with Data SIM Cards (provided free by Vodafone) and we can now request DfE data dongles.
  • Increasing Mobile Data: Some mobile network providers are temporarily increasing data allowances for mobile devices. Schools need to request the mobile data increase on behalf of pupils and will write to parents in order to collect the data required to do this.
How will my child be taught remotely? 

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

  • live teaching (online lessons)
  • recorded teaching (e.g. Government recommended Oak National Academy lessons, video/audio recordings made by teachers)
  • textbooks and reading books pupils have at home
  • websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences

Engagement and Feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home? 
  • We request your support in ensuring your child maintains the same level of engagement as they would in school. Staff will continue to deliver new content to ensure there are no gaps in learning and therefore if your child does not engage they will miss out and fall behind.
  • We encourage parents to set routines to support their child’s education, this includes providing students with a quiet space and suitable equipment such as a desk, chair and stationary to support home learning.
How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns? 

Pupils attendance will be recorded using ClassCharts and year teams will contact parents of pupils not engaging.

Information for students:

What happens if I miss a lesson?

  • You are required to follow your timetable and engage/interact with the live lessons.  If you need a copy of your timetable, contact your Year Team
  • Everything remains on Teams so you can still see the learning materials after the lesson has ended. You are expected to keep up to date with your work
  • If your teacher has live streamed a lesson, this will be recorded and made available after the lesson for you to watch

If you have further questions or would like feedback, you can post a message into the class team chat.  Your teacher will respond in a timely manner.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress? 

Staff will regularly assess the work students are completing on Teams. Staff will use a combination of whole class feedback, live marking in lessons, marking of assignments to provide students with individual feedback.

Additional Support for Pupils

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education? 

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • We have invited all EHCP pupils to the on-site provision by the SENCO and TAs.  
  • We have ensured that all EHCP pupils are able to access live lessons using school provided laptops and on site provision with support from SENCO and TAs.
  • We will provide coloured overlays/exercise books upon request.  
  • The SENCO will contact all students with EHCPs to update the section M of their plan. 
  • The SENCO will contact SEN pupils weekly to ensure they can access remote learning, any issues that arise will be resolved as appropriate- all communication will be recorded on Class Charts.
  • Our teaching assistants have been assigned to act as key workers for SEN students to support access to online lessons and to check in on students’ well-being.

Remote Education for Self-isolating Pupils 

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above? 

During other periods of isolation, when students are sent home to self-isolate:

Staff will deliver a blended approach consisting of live teaching (where possible) and providing work on Teams for students to complete. Students need to follow their regular timetable while isolating.
